COAT OF SMILES, parody art of iconic symbols. A duck's hat, a mouse's ears and a smiling yellow button. Three iconic things brought together in one artwork.

Escape from Duckburg?

Get out! This year marks the 10th anniversary of an animated show that never was, centered around and on Duckburg's dark knight 'The Duck Avenger', Donald Duck's famous alter-ago. Back then, my designs were Disney's final choice to get the test phase started. After all, the show was not greenlit.

This piece here was a kind of by-product or extra to my visual development efforts, mostly carried out for internal sport in order to have some sort of "film poster" for my studio wall. At that time I was playing around with ideas for the main character's gadgets and super suits (like the dragon tuxedo here) and some titles design options. Big thanks to head of development Robert Chandler who encouraged me to do "my thing" with the characters.

Loud Duck Apparel

About two years ago, I created The Loud Duck character for a satire project on art museums. Even a fashion label, Loud Duck Apparel, for the museum shops was part of the concept.

Donald Duck: Cast-Off Development Artwork

Apropos everybody's favourite frustrated fowl, here are some early test bits (ca. 2019/2020) from a yet untitled DD project by writer Denis-Pierre Filippi and me. BTW, nothing of this here gives away anything, the project's story and focus completely changed since we started. ©Disney. All rights reserved.

Everybody's favourite frustrated fowl

Yesterday evening, sunset. I swear, I saw a guy at the beach, exactly in the same pose and mood.

Duckland Marseille

Duckland Marseille? No, but in a transferred sense. I relocated my drawing desk to Marseille, France. For the next two weeks. Right in this very street, BTW.

DUCKLAND 2: Another Cast-Off Piece

I took a shot at a couple of different pieces for the show's signature illustration. Like this one here, a sort of personal classic of mine, which will be part of the exhibition, but for the main artwork I will go with something different, less extravagant and easier to read visually. I'll show you later.
The six-arms character here was originally a Ghostbusters parody sketch, which was done just for the fun of it.

DUCKLAND 2

'Duckland 2' is on its way. In about two months from now, on October 14th 2021, Duckland will return with a grand show at the Orpheum Theatre.

This is first teaser material, not the actual poster. Apart from that, it is probably important to point out, that the show's nature will be different to its first instalment at the Kasematten venue on Castle Hill. It will be not a replicate of the original show. In fact, it will give more weight to the preliminary drawing process than to the finished work. I'll keep you posted!

*BTW, I didn't get Donald Duck's hat wrong, nor did I draw him, this is just one of my random cartoon ducks in a 1$ shop costume with a banana duct-taped to the head.

Swollen-hat-ed

As much I love my job as a visual development artist and character designer in the animation film industry, I also love the liberty of painting and drawing away without any guidance of a director or production designer. Working for film, of course, wouldn't work without guidance, it never would. Instructions are needed to reach a film team's goal.
However, parody-art works like a catalyser for me, it kind of weeds out all things constructional, prepared, coordinated etc. It's a little bit like staying drunk on drawing, so reality can't intervene with it.
