COAT OF SMILES, parody art of iconic symbols. A duck's hat, a mouse's ears and a smiling yellow button. Three iconic things brought together in one artwork.

Pif Gadget

Rough colour sketch for a licensing test, from long ago. 'Pif' was a French comic magazine superstar in 1970s, the magazine's record print run was one million copies. 'Pif' inspired similar comic magazines in other countries, like 'Yps' in the German speaking countries and 'Jippo' in Scandinavia. Cover illustration by Sire Giorgio Cavazzano: Here are two lovely model sheets of Pif and Hercule, by the uber-talented Stefano Intini:

Character Design Class 2020, Film Academy Baden-Wuerttemberg, Ludwigsburg

These here are demo bits from the character design class I was hosting at Film Academy Baden-Wuerttemberg, this week. For the first time completely remotely via Zoom, from home. I was surprised how well everything worked out. I'm looking forward to posting more from the material I was showing at the class, during the next days. Take care, everyone!

The demo below, 'Creature materializes in the streets of New York City', was about using references regarding perspective, colour design, shape and speed layout sketching. (Images via the wonderful Vintage New York - For everything old New York. Please note, the photos here are solely the property of their respective owners and are shown here for educational and inspirational purposes only. I don't own any of them, except for the monster sketch, of course.)

The Avenger Duck, original coloured pencils production drawing

The other week, under a pile of old drawings, I found an analog preliminary colour test sketch of Donald Duck's alter ego, The Avenger Duck , aka Paperinik, Phantomias, PK, etc. This was the very coloured pencils drawing from which the digitally clean-up was created, later (ca. 2011, from a TV series vis-dev production I was designing on, back then).

The physics of everyday character design

I think this here pretty much sums up everything what is important in character animation design. Line of action, pose, silhouette/shape, negative space, weight, perspective, volume, balance, references, coffee ... ---

Duckling Dodgers, dreaming of the 24½th Century

Moon landscape: 'Mechanix Illustrated', SEP. 1945 (LINK). Text box reads: "As the moon is approached by our rocket ship, its craters, seas and mountain ranges become visible; here, the ship is 500 miles above its surface. Moon is terrestrial body with no atmosphere." Images (2) via 'Modern Mechanix - Yesterday's tomorrow today'

Daffy Duckling

Picture it: Los Angeles, California. In the 1930ies. The ducklings Donald and Daffy are attending the same kindergarten ... think stress is only for adults?

Mouseketeer Number One

Wait a minute, since there had been Mickey Mouse merch in the 1920ies and 1930ies already, little Donald Duckling (*1934) must have had some, back in his early childhood, right? I'm just saying. (Photo via TheStar) (Images via The Disney Elite)

Super Duck, Duck-Avenger, Paperinik, Phantomias, Fantomiald, Patomás, Phantom Duck, Fantonald, ...

I bet when Donald Duck was a little duckling he already dreamed of becoming the masked champion. Apropos, in the German speaking countries, Donald Duck's superhero alter ego is going with the name 'Phantomias'. In Italy, where the character was originally created (back in the 1960s, by Elisa Penna, Giovan Battista Carpi and Guido Martina), ...
"Donald first gets used to his vigilante gear in Paperinik il diabolico vendicatore (The Diabolical Duck Avenger, 1969); story by Elisa Penna and Guido Martina, art by Giovan Battista Carpi." (Image and text via D23 - ©Disney)
... he's called 'Paperinik' i.e. 'PK'. In the US, I think, it's 'Super-Duck' and in the UK 'Duck Avenger', or is it the other way round? For more about the masked duck avenger, please follow the link here (LINK).

Here's my parody tribute. Donald Duck, the masked duckling. Phantomini? #donaldduck #parodyart #parodytribute #characterdesign #duckling #paperinik #duckavenger #superduck #superhero #phantomias

Donald Duck, about 86 years ago

1934

Transforming the #sixfanarts project, by pasting in the same thing six times, loosely inspired by Warhol's Campbell's Soup cans theme ...
... and putting it in a museum setting, voilà:
