COAT OF SMILES, parody art of iconic symbols. A duck's hat, a mouse's ears and a smiling yellow button. Three iconic things brought together in one artwork.
The PAPERWALKER Journal is the personal weblog of DUCKLAND creator and award-winning character designer Florian Satzinger – who worked on characters such as Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Looney Tunes (Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Silvester etc.), Pinky And The Brain, A.J.Hogg and Scooby-Doo, for studios such as Warner Bros., Disney, ReelFX and Zanuck Family Entertainment – in which he shares bits and pieces of his character design work, processes, visual development, inspirations and reference materials of current, past and future projects.

PLEASE NOTE, the displayed parody artworks of classical cartoon characters are not copies but distinct satiric imitations/caricatures, by exaggerating and transforming the original characters and their related indica (see 'Coat of Smiles') in a way that creates new originals and new meanings, different from the intentions of the originals.

2026 Exhibition

The official exhibition poster is out now. Just to be sure, here are the exact dates: "Enten, die sich in Raketen retten" (Ducks, who save themselves in rocket ships) – June 3rd to July 26th, 2026, Comic Museum Erlangen, Erlangen, Germany.
The poster illustrations are a "fusion homage" to four of the artists who have probably influenced my work most: Carl Barks, Bruno Bozzetto, André Franquin and Chuck Jones. Typical elements from all four are incorporated differently into the drawings.

Flash Gordon-ish

Very early «John Starduck» development sketches. Initially, I was still searching for a design language for the spaceships and all the technical aspects, like those seen in «Flash Gordon», for example. But I quickly abandoned that idea. Not that I didn't like it, it just seemed a bit too old-fashioned. A rocket with a balcony and curtains. That wasn't what I wanted.

Duck or Pencil

The question of which came first, the duck or the egg, doesn't arise with Donald. He hatched from a pencil.

Erlangen Title Sujet: 3rd And Final Rough Pass

Third and final rough pass of the preliminary sketch for the Erlangen exhibition poster. The poster itself will then be equipped with a bright red background, as seen in the teaser. The texts and names here are only for the sketch and will not be used on the poster in this form.

One more, or rather three: I've also incorporated three of my personal art-titans and influences into the exhibition's title illustration, with little drawn references. Donald's hat is for Carl Barks, the magic whistle and the horse broom (from Mr. Rossi) are for Bruno Bozzetto, and Spirou's cap and the Zorglub emblem is for André Franquin.
