COAT OF SMILES, parody art of iconic symbols. A duck's hat, a mouse's ears and a smiling yellow button. Three iconic things brought together in one artwork.

Up in the air

This here was the first ever concept sketch I did linked to a Alfred J. Kwak sequel project. Over a period of about five or six years, with lots of ons and (more) offs, I worked as a designer on this beloved TV series character from the late 1980s. My participation was originally initiated by the late Harald Siepermann himself who proposed me to take care of drawing the character. Unfortunately, the project is still up in the air, mostly for legal/business reasons.

However that may be, I was honoured - and still am - for Harald's trust in me.

Turning Saul Steinberg's work into a zombie?

It is often a thin line that divides kitsch from cool, but anyways, here I just enjoyed myself using flat and depth in a mix, inspired by one of Saul Steinberg's superior line drawings.

Production art: Vicky the Viking

These here are a couple of breathtakingly beautiful original production art pieces (actually used for a flashback sequence in season 2, episode 5, 'The Danish Adventure') from 'Vicky the Viking', an Austrian-German-Japanese animated television series from the 1970s.

The series never looks cheap even though its quite limited character animation. I loved it as a kid and still do. There were a couple of reboots, both life action and 3D, but they don't even come close to the congeniality and originality of the original, mildly said.

Off-model Mickey wearing a hoodie

Back in 2018, with the view to my participation in the grand Disney exhibition '90 Years of Magic - Mickey, The True Original', I did a vast number of Mickey Mouse sketches, yet most of which didn't make it on my clean-up shortlist for the show, so these stayed in that rough kind of state. Like this quite off-model Mickey Mouse, here. Inspired by some old book illustrations from 1935, from the book 'Mickey Mouse, Crusoe'. My idea was to juxtapose a very contemporary Mickey reading against his historic self, in a museum's showroom setting of sorts.

Same ingredients, different meals

Even a rather simple cartoon duck's arm and hand requires the same drawing abilities needed for drawing realistic animals and humans, in order to make it believable.

The human hand sketch here (see bottom row) was used as reference, done by Andrey Samarin, the cartoon style things are mine.

The Incredible Duckling i.e. Hulkling

One last Donald Duckling thing. Here, he's following the motto "dress to impress with the best costume in town", ACME's Halloween costume kit Mod.Nr.2-4-6, "Incredible Arms", inflatable.
