A question of practice and joy

If you want to be able to draw cartoon ducks reasonably well on a professional scale, you might do well to draw a lot of ducks just for fun every now and then. For me it is always a new lesson. A lesson that is enjoyable, but it remains a lesson.

Disney Topolino № 3597Special Edition, Lucca Comics 2024

I just realized that I am the very first international artist to design/draw a Disney Topolino magazine cover. I thought I was the first Austrian, but to be the first worldwide is surprising.

What makes it special for me personally is that there is no shortage of world-class Disney artists in Italy - they don't really need anyone to "help" them. Seriously, Italian artists in particular have always given the Disney comic books universe a unique dynamism and elegance in line, design and stories.

Now the time has come, yesterday it was officially announced by Topolino, my limited edition variant cover for the Mickey Mouse/Topolino Magazine No 3597 will be released in time for the Lucca Games & Comics Con, OCT 30th - NOV 3rd 2024, available at the Panini Comics Pavilion. Here is the cover illustration by me.

By the way, the colors for the beast here, I borrowed a little from Elliot, Pete's dragon. I thought, if it's going to be Disney, then it should be all Disney.

Donald Duck, Homer Simpson

The advantage of my work reaching into the realm of contemporary art is that I can ask questions there that I probably wouldn't be allowed to in the industry. Like for example: does Donald Duck sometimes feel the same way about one of his nephews as Homer Simpson does about his son Bart?

This picture can't really be misunderstood, because I think it is obvious, but I'm including it anyway just to be on the safe side: This is satire, it is a satirical allusion to the physical father-son conflicts between Homer and Bart Simpson. And the interesting thing is that it feels – of course – wrong to see Donald doing this. Although I think Donald is perfectly capable of sometimes feeling like "attacking" one of his nephews, but never actually doing it.

“Chirp!”

Here I wanted to try out what Donald Duck would look like as a songbird. Chirping instead of quacking, as a side effect.

By the way, I have used a different line drawing technique here, only very roughly, it is not a final clean-up drawing, but I am happy with the result. I normally prefer highly pigmented dark pencils to regular inking tools, but at the moment I am working on something that requires rich and clear black lines, my usual lines would be too sketchy for that.
