"Do your anatomy homework, baby!"

Happy Halloween, everyone!

Not necessarily evil

The planet Mercury, in particular, is a habitat for all sorts of creatures—not necessarily evil, but certainly very hungry. Johnny has a set of evasive maneuvers and technical aids to help him navigate his stopover on the planet closest to the Sun in our solar system with relative ease.

These are all just rough, thrown-together concepts; I like to generate a good volume of material so that I have a range of options to choose from later on.

The duck's new clothes

It’s been a while since I last posted anything about John Starduck. Johnny is currently undergoing a bit of an update; I wasn’t entirely convinced by the color scheme of his spacesuit. And let’s not forget the helmet’s design. I felt it needed a high-contrast silhouette—that’s where the rabbit-ear-shaped antennas came in.
Now, I’ve reached the point I was aiming for. Here’s a little rough sketches preview of what’s been in the works...

Nonsense

It is delightful to draw nonsense, provided that the nonsense is well-founded.

I'm pretty sure dragons taste like pistachios. At least the green ones.

I’m a bit of an anatomy geek when it comes to my design work, and I wanted to show that—especially with large, bulky creatures—I often find a "perspective stage" helpful during the initial sketching phase.

I draw a few box-like concrete blocks in the space and then place the figure on top of them. These blocks automatically become a kind of measuring tool for volume, depth, and perspective throughout the design process. I’ve been doing it this way for—what feels like—forever.

Guys, please excuse me—this is a joke; I was just messing with a drawing that didn't turn out right.

Donald Duck Facial Expression Stress Test: Preliminary sketch process

Rough and scratchy

... and the colors just slapped on. More process examples from my catalog of incredibly rough preliminary sketches. Everything is rough—just dashed off.

And as you can see, devising mobility solutions for Donald Duck has become a chronic pleasure of mine.

Picsou Magazine

The French Disney magazine Picsou (French for Scrooge McDuck) has showcased my wacky duck deconstructions over a few pages. What a feast for the beaks—and for me.

Wolf at the pencils

A pretty accurate depiction of that moment at work when the lines of the drawings start to feel like overcooked capellini pasta. That’s when it’s time to take a break.

Coat of Arms: Steiermark

I had already posted this before, hadn't I—my rebranding of the coat of arms of the Austrian federal state where I live: Steiermark.

On the left is my rebrand; at the top right, the current official version; and at the bottom left, a early version from around 1340.

Incidentally, the heraldic animal—a panther—is not a panther in the literal sense, but a mythical creature. It has a horse's head, a lion's mane, a lion's tail, bull's horns, and claws. Originally, the panther breathed fire—a feature symbolizing strength and defensive prowess. I swapped the fire for a piping-hot espresso, and the mythical panther creature for my favorite cartoon panther.

* Erwin Schrödinger (see Schrödinger's Cat Experiment) didn't intend to describe a real physical scenario, but rather to illustrate the absurdity of a particular interpretation of quantum mechanics. I had now invited myself to further increase the density of absurdity with Donald and his well-known superpositions of states.

Donald Plus

Here I had digitally revised an analog preliminary drawing, very roughly, but then I didn't pursue it further. That is, not yet.

A drawn smile,as I see it

Here is the colored clean-up of my Steamboat Willie piece ...

#steamboatwillie #mickeymouse #postpopart

Willie!

The boat here is intentionally much smaller than in the original film, in order to make Mickey – or rather Willie – appear much larger in relation to the steamboat (comparable – a little – to the African Queen, in terms of boat size) to fit everything neatly onto a portrait-format drawing sheet.

Cardboardboat Willie

As a child I had the idea of building a ship out of cardboard, which I would then coat on the outside with candle wax to make it waterproof and seaworthy.
