COAT OF SMILES, parody art of iconic symbols. A duck's hat, a mouse's ears and a smiling yellow button. Three iconic things brought together in one artwork.
The PAPERWALKER Journal is the personal weblog of DUCKLAND creator and award-winning character designer Florian Satzinger – who worked on characters such as Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Looney Tunes (Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Silvester etc.), Pinky And The Brain, A.J.Hogg and Scooby-Doo, for studios such as Warner Bros., Disney, ReelFX and Zanuck Family Entertainment – in which he shares bits and pieces of his character design work, processes, visual development, inspirations and reference materials of current, past and future projects.

Rough Sketch vs Finished Piece: Duck Launch

Follow-up to Sebastian Errazuriz' Saturday-morning duck-launch routine. For those of you who like the messy preliminary stuff.

However, enjoy your weekend everybody, whether you launch ducks too or not.

Even I grew out of that very shirt, long, long ago. I'm still sticking to the style, hahaha.

And Now For Something Completely Different: Bears

Quite some time back, I think in 2014, I created these two lads for an Austrian ski resort. However, not all that long ago, I was asked to bring them back, for the resort's fitness parcours for all ages and skill levels. Here are the final colour versions vs the rough blue layout drawings.

Domus - La Città Del Papero - The City Of The Duck

«But what if Carl Barks had choosen modernist architecture as reference for Donald Duck's house? Probably, it would have changed the course of suburban lifestyle.»
This is for sure the most personal art-parody I did in a while. Actually, as a son of an architect I was surrounded by all things modern architecture and magazines like 'domus', my entire life. Modernist architecture had and still has an enormous influence on me and on how I see the world and pin down/draw/design things.

Duck Launch

I hijacked Sebastian's Saturday-morning duck-launch exercise. Just for the art of it.

Erich Schleyer (1940 - 2021)

Good bye Erich Schleyer. German-born and Austrian-based actor, writer, journalist. A man with a face like a ten-time Academy Award winner, but most importantly, Austria's greatest children's TV-show host and storyteller, by far. There was nobody, really nobody, who could equal his talent communicating with children so naturally.

Made-Up Disneyland Sponsored Racing Team: Time-Lapse, Rough Design Process

I already posted this rocket car design here earlier this year.

However, I reedited the clip the other day for some size reasons. In particular, the time-lapse bit was displayed way too small in the previous version. I think, one can follow it way better, now.

ACME's Picture Frame

The empty picture frame here is an advanced version of the one with Alvertos Duck in it (see below the empty frame). The advanced one automatically detects the quality level of an artwork once put into the frame and disintegrates it the AMCE way, if required. BOOOOM! ;-)
As mentioned above, this is Daffy Duck's made-up cousin Alvertos Duck. His full name goes Alvertos Calder Manning Esmond Duck, but everybody calls him ACME.

Time lapse: Full rough drawing process

This is a screen recording of my digital drawing process from way back. Even 'The Washington Post' included it to their Newest Video Picks then:
«Here’s some beautiful character work from Austria’s Florian Satzinger, who blogs over at the Paperwalker Journal. The artist [...] continues his work-in-progress videos featuring “warm-up sketches”.»
Anyways, it's still quite representative of how I play even today.

The Red Canard X-2: Rough Colour Sketch, Incl. Vintage Toy Reference

The ducks from the A.C.M.E. Spaceflight Department's press office reported that 'The Red Canard' made the Kessel Run in less than seventeen parsecs. Well, it doesn't top the Millennium Falcon's twelve parasecs, but anyways, it's pretty fast still.

BTW, I remember seeing an interview with George Lucas, where he had this very tin toy rocket standing on his work desk. See at minute 20:36 The Making of Star Wars (1977)

Duckland: Souvenirs

Apropos preliminary colour pencils vs digital clean-up (see previous posting). Here's the original colour sketch of the Duckland show's main character sujet, showing Wolfgang Amadeus Duck. Plus two photos of the show's opening day, back in March this year.

Fat 313

Preliminary colour pencils vs digital clean-up, spoofing contemporary artists Maurizio Cattelan, Erwin Wurm and Donald Duck.

BTW, as I learned recently, late Austrian artist Manfred Deix already had developed and carried out the idea of "fat cars" for the magazine Profil in the 1970s. Since Deix always has been an undoubted inspiration for the Austrian arts scene it shouldn't wonder if some of Erwin Wurm's sculptures were highly inspired by Deix' works and genius.
