Number One, She Is

I just came across something really interesting from our science fiction's past: USS Enterprise's very first officer (Number One) was a woman (in the very first Star Trek pilot "The Cage").



This is an absolutely fascinating article on how badly a woman in command was received back in those days: Quoting the "First Lady of Star Trek"
