COAT OF SMILES, parody art of iconic symbols. A duck's hat, a mouse's ears and a smiling yellow button. Three iconic things brought together in one artwork.
The PAPERWALKER Journal is the personal weblog of DUCKLAND creator and award-winning character designer Florian Satzinger – who worked on characters such as Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Looney Tunes (Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Silvester etc.), Pinky And The Brain, A.J.Hogg and Scooby-Doo, for studios such as Warner Bros., Disney, ReelFX and Zanuck Family Entertainment – in which he shares bits and pieces of his character design work, processes, visual development, inspirations and reference materials of current, past and future projects.

PLEASE NOTE, the displayed parody artworks of classical cartoon characters are not copies but distinct satiric imitations/caricatures, by exaggerating and transforming the original characters and their related indica (see 'Coat of Smiles') in a way that creates new originals and new meanings, different from the intentions of the originals.

Drawing Crest

After clean-up and adding the claws I probably will have to wear some falconry gloves.

Sneak Peek

I'm not allowed to reveal more of this. But this little piece of it is absolutely safe to post. I hope you like it anyway, even though it doesn't show much.

A Carl Barks On Steroids

One of my favorite reviews of my work was "Florian Satzinger: a Carl Barks on steroids." Anyways, I just was reminded of this during drawing this chap here.

Work In Progress

Here we go, this here's some work-in-progress artwork of the PIXEL 8 rocket jet. I completely forgot that I originally was going for a sort of running motorsuit and a creature on the back seat...

One, Two, Three, Four... Angoulême!

Here's a clean-up process break down in 4 steps. I branded this very piece with one of the Meet Ze Artists (April 19-21, 2013) event sponsors Caran d'Ache because it dovetails so nicely with the idea of the tree which grows blue col-erase pencils.

Another Process Film Clip: Rough Construction

Well, the character design of this bear here is indeed not that inventive, but it shows nicely how I get startet when I begin a new digital sketch.

P.S.: Don't miss Hans Bacher's latest post, which is, as he writes, the first of a series of posts on legendary Disney artists. And, btw, Paris based artist and fellow The Art Center team-mate Xavier "XAV" Ramonède posted a beautiful step-by-step run of his latest illustration. Check it out right over here! So, last but not least, it's always a delight to stop by Studio Soi's Newsblog and Hat's smashingly beautiful artbox of tricks!

This is the roughness I usually start with. BTW, Uli is back blogging! And how! Check out this hand-drawn animation test gem:

Rough Process; C.C. Cooper

Update on the fly (Fri, Aug 27, 2010): Recently, I discovered the wonderful work of the smashingly talented Taylor Krahenbuhl: Just wow!

Here's is a little update (Tue, Aug 24, 2010): Charley Parker did a lovely post about one of my favorite impressionist painters: Colin Campell Cooper. I'm fascinated by his street scenes and skyscrapers of New York and Philadelphia.

This is another rough "beak an' ride" concept piece which I did sometime earlier this year in parallel with that motor-suit piece.

The inspiration came, partly, from here:

Paper Ladder

There's not much to say about this one except that I use lines of action like twisted stave lines of sorts.

Drawing Desk

Recently I was flipping through a couple of older sketches for some art book related things and found this really wicked piece. Which I should really get round to clean up some time.

Hey, this is from my analog era! Paper and pencils! :)

Colour Concept Painting

Before I start working on the clean-up I often do a speed painting. And then from that I "extract" the colour palette for the final piece. Just now I'm working on the final line work of this large poster sujet... I'll will post the finished piece sometime soon.
