COAT OF SMILES, parody art of iconic symbols. A duck's hat, a mouse's ears and a smiling yellow button. Three iconic things brought together in one artwork.

Telephone Doodle Smoke

Well, this piece is quite a bit strange, isn't it?

The story behind this piece is that last week, my students and I were exploring the bone structure/locomotory system of elephants and were watching the Disney short 'Goliath II' and became totally lost in designing characters from those references. The funny legged monsters (below on the right) are btw by the talented Dustin Schiele. Great abstraction on the theme, love it.

For the most beautiful elephant designs on this very planet please go over here, Andrew's talent is high at the highest levels.

The Elephant With A Beak

Well, unsurprisingly for me, the elephant got a beak.

However, surprisingly, no motorpunk device or thing anywhere. Apropos deformation, look what Andrei did on the Wolfman! Holy moly!

Nemoland 2010: The ACME Pose Maker

I just came back from Nemoland and it was great. Eric Goldberg is an absolutely uber-talented man. He's up to every animation trick. The rough piece below was btw one of the things I dealed with in my workshop there. I talked a lot about reference material, inspiration, creation and the like.
I'm again way behind with answering e-mails, sending out things, replying to comments etc. So sorry for everyone is waiting, I will get back to it as soon as possible!

Apropos lectures, here are some recent pics of my this year's animation class at the University of Applied Sciences Salzburg. The students are highly talented and they are really fun to work with.

In Good Company

Next week, I will return to my duties as a workshop host at the Nemoland Festival in Florence, Italy. This time, I'll focus on creation and inspiration. BTW, it seems like I am in good company there... :o)

Apropos, a great many of my vehicle designs are pretty much inspired by the legendary Dymaxion car and Ford's Lincoln Futura.

Apropos (2), this is a lecture which changed my life as an artist and I know it will work for you as well:

Motor-Owl

Some things become very popular only to fall out of bird's favour later.

Btw, apologies for the lack of replies to comments and mails, been some really hectic and busy days here lately.

Inspiration: SwissMiss

This is one of my favorite places I go on the internet nearly every day, Tina Roth Eisenberg's swissmiss design blog. Today, one of my space-suit-loving StarDucks characters visited Tina in here office in NYC to say hello and to show her his newly bought swiss-suit:

Update: I forgot to mention, that he's a wrestling suit lover, too. They call him 'The Red 4-Legged Iron Feather'.

Btw, not long ago, something that really helped me out creating the background for the "Goldberg piece" were the colours of that very photo:

Walt Disney: World's Fair 1964 NYC

I really do love those backstage films from the past.

While I'm on posting an older clip, here's one of my most favorite student films I've seen the last years: "Who's Hungry?" by David Ochs

Here are the show reactions to Ochs' film:

Last but not least, I put up a link to a short clip about Thierry Martin, a French comic artist who I admire very much. Even though the clip is in French, Thierry's talent is easy to understand ;) Btw, you can check out his personal weblog here.

The Inner Workings of The XR-3000 Z (or why the butterfly became a jetbug)

This is a follow to the last post: May I introduce Mr. Drummond to you? He loves btw hiding in letterboxes, too.

This work-in-progress chart I put together for my recent posting at The Art Center blog:

----
Here is an update in order to put us all in the right mood for the Nemoland event 2010 in Florence, Italy: Here is a brilliantly hand-drawn Rolo commerical from the mid-80s animated by this year's Nemoland honoree Eric Goldberg (I'll be there too, to host a workshop but principally to marvel at Eric Goldberg's talks and workshops):

The ACME Corp.'s Super Mind's Eye XR-3000 Z Delta Bravo (or the way how I look at things)

I felt like putting up a new blog header. Of course with a (typical of me) "built-in" reference to Ria Irvin's Eustace Tilley (The New Yorker magazine's iconic corporate character). This here started btw as a scratchy piece I picked out of a pile of StarDucks ballpoint test sketches.

When I come to consider it, my machines - all of them - have a strong reference to André Franquin's mad vehicles and machines...

This fake cover can fall in the category "The Duckish Face of Eustace Tilley":

This is more adequate, I guess:

How To Snitch The Brain of Eric Goldberg And Record It On A Steak

Okay, here's my plan: What is sure is that Disney's Eric Goldberg will come to Florence in May to accept the Nemoland Award 2010. As last year's honoree, I will be there, too. So far, so good. Then, during the award giving ceremony, when everbody will be distracted by this very moment, I'll mount the ACME XR Brain Copy 3000 (with the latest 6 Gigahertz StarDucks Motorpunk chip inside) and record Eric Goldberg's knowledge, skills and talents on one of those huge Fiorentina Steaks. Immediately afterwards, I'll barbecue and scarf it down and become the world's first one-man band feature film production studio! Darned good idea, no?
