Hans Bacher Goes Alps

Multifunctional Super Suit

These are some early sketches for a little side project I'm developing together with NYC based designer Tina Roth Eisenberg. It has to do with a duck and its super suit. In the final stages of the design, I focused more on the creative features of the suit than on the weird ones shown here. Anyway, I thought it would be nice to share those early steps of the process before they disappear in my archive...

Corporate Colours: Pixel 5

It's fair to say that this could be a textbook example for working with corporate colours and symbols :) BTW, if you're in the Vienna area this November I hope to see you at the PIXEL 5 - The Annual Austrian Conference on Computer Graphics and Animation, Austrian Academy of Science, November 5th-7th 2010.

At the conference, there will be held an exhibition of original sketches and finished artwork presenting the never before shown StarDucks© initiation short story.

The Monkey King, Transformed

I was invited by dear colleague and good pal Su Haitao to participate in the book project 72 Transformations: Concept Designs for the Monkey King, doing my very own interpretation of the popular Chinese character. I thought it would be nice to share a work-in-progress piece here on the blog.

My idea, however, was to put the character not in a typical Monkey King action or combat scene but something more "behind the scenes". The hero inserts his famous flying cloud (with the assistance of a - for me typically - Steampunk insert-apparatus) right inside a kind of a giant lindworm or wingless dragon in order to make the monster be able to fly and to apply it as a chic sky-roadster with a nice Steampunk-ish cockpit attachment.

The complete process and the final artwork will be shown exclusively in the book.

Here's is a little update (Tue, Aug 24, 2010): Charley Parker did a lovely post about one of my favorite impressionist painters: Colin Campell Cooper. I'm fascinated by his street scenes and skyscrapers of New York and Philadelphia.

Artificial Beak

Apropos inspiration (see also the previous post): I was truly fascinated by this eagle's "beak job". This greatly inspired my way of designing beaks with character, as you can see here from the samples below.

First off, I'm willing to own up that I'm addicted to ducks and mad motor rides with legs and beaks. Sorry BTW for posting just rough pieces at the moment and no finished things and sorry for the lack of replies to comments and e-mails - I'm a little underequipped here. In fact, I'm posting from a netbook and time is running way too fast here in NYC.
